Granny Apple Crochet Pattern
Granny Apple Crochet Pattern: Symbol Chart and Written Instructions
Left-Handed and Right-Handed Crochet Versions
I've finally put together written instructions for my Granny Apple Crochet Pattern I designed and symbol-charted last year ๐ What's more, I've done it for left-handed crocheters too! As a leftie in the righties' world - I say this lovingly ๐ I know how important it is to have an easier access to things left-handed. I've taught myself to write and crochet with my right hand, so I'm pretty comfortable with right-handed patterns and things in general. But, I wish there were more...cups and mugs with cool art - on the RIGHT side - for lefties! ๐

R2: sl st in ch1 space, (ch3, 2dc, ch1, 3dc) in same ch1 space; [skip 3dc, work (3dc, ch1, 3dc) in next ch1 space] 3 times around, skip remaining 3 sts; sl st in top of initial ch3 to join.
R3: ch3, skip 3sts, [work (3dc, ch1, 3dc) in ch1 space, skip 3dc, work 3dc in space between 3rd dc just skipped and next dc, skip 3dc], repeat [] 3 times around; work (3dc, ch1, 3dc) in ch1 space, skip 3dc, work 2dc in between 3rd dc just skipped and next st; sl st in top of initial ch3 to join.
R4: (hdc, 2dc) in space between ch3 and dc of R3, skip 3dc, (3dc, ch1, 3dc) in ch1 space, (skip 3dc, 3dc in next space) twice, skip 3dc, sc in ch1 space, skip 3dc, [(3dc, ch1, 3dc) in next space, skip 3dc] twice, sc in ch1 space, (skip 3dc, 3dc in next space) twice, skip 3dc, (3dc, ch1, 3dc) in ch1 space, skip 3dc, (2dc, hdc) in next space, skip 1dc, *sl st in next 2 sts. Fasten off, weave in ends.
*or: sl st in next st and proceed to B - stem and leaf - if using same color as A.
B: Stem and Leaf
Color B
Right-Handed:
(a) Join Color B to center top of Apple. ch9, hdc in 3rd ch from hook, sc in next ch, sl st in next 2 ch;
(b) ch8, sl st in 6th ch from hook, turn work right/clockwise right side facing (now - 5ch loop is to the left of hook, rest of chains - to the right, and working yarn end is underneath the loop);
(c) place hook in loop, pick up yarn, pull up loop, sc; (hdc, 3dc) in loop; ch3, sl st in 3rd ch from hook for picot (now - work is to the left of/below the hook, right side facing);
(d) work (sc, 2hdc, dc) in last dc made in loop: place hook in space between the last 2 dcs made in loop, pick up yarn and pull it up to complete sts;
(e) work (3dc, 3hdc) in 5ch loop - over the remaining chains of loop; sl st in ch following ch5 loop - i.e. in same ch as sl st in step (b) - see above; sl st in next 2 ch;
(d) sl st in remaining 3 ch, i.e. in initial 3 ch of work; sc in same ch as last sl st.
Sl st or sc to the top of Apple, fasten off, weave in ends.
Left-Handed:
(a) Join Color B to center top of Apple. ch9, hdc in 3rd ch from hook, sc in next ch, sl st in next 2 ch;
(b) ch8, sl st in 6th ch from hook, turn work left/counterclockwise right side facing (now - 5ch loop is to the right of hook, rest of chains - to the left, and working yarn end is underneath the loop);
(c) place hook in loop, pick up yarn, pull up loop, sc; (hdc, 3dc) in loop; ch3, sl st in 3rd ch from hook for picot (now - work is to the right of/below the hook, right side facing);
(d) work (sc, 2hdc, dc) in last dc made in loop: place hook in space between the last 2 dcs made in loop, pick up yarn and pull it up to complete sts;
(e) work (3dc, 3hdc) in 5ch loop - over the remaining chains of loop; sl st in ch following 5ch loop - i.e. in same ch as sl st in step (b) - see above; sl st in next 2 ch;
(d) sl st in remaining 3 ch, i.e. in initial 3 ch of work; sc in same ch as last sl st.
Sl st or sc to the top of Apple, fasten off, weave in ends.
Note: “B” can be worked and finished separately and then attached to the Apple. This will allow some flexibility in choosing a finishing technique and help determine the best join position for the stem. E.g. if you plan to sc a border around the entire piece incl A and B, the finished piece may look better if B is joined off-center - between the center dc and ch3 of R3 of Apple (see symbol chart). You can see sample finished items in my original wordpress post* Granny Apple or Adventures in Crochet Pattern Making.
*My Granny Apple Crochet Pattern originally appeared on my wordpress blog in 2016 and included a symbol crochet chart only.
Suggested Finishing Technique:
Complete Apple in Color A; beginning at top of Apple, reverse sc - i.e. crab stitch around in Color C, join to complete the round, fasten off. Attach finished Stem and Leaf in Color B at top-center of Apple; at bottom-center, using Color B - sew on an X placing stitches in the 2 dcs at center. The result would look something like this:

One last note, I’ve experimented with different yarn-hook-tension combinations. It appears that certain combinations may cause curling/cupping of Apple in the final round. This may naturally occur while the round is still in progress given the nature of the pattern structure, and should resolve on its own when the round is complete. However, if you’ve finished the item and the apple is curling up and you find this 3D effect ๐ undesirable, there is a perfect fix for the problem:
for the final round, use a crochet hook 0.5mm larger than the hook used for the first 3 rounds; e.g.: R1-3 - I/5.5mm; R4 - J/6.00mm.
Happy Crocheting! ๐๐
